A quick change of clothes for the Grady boy (ergh to leaky nappy!) and we’re off to see the New Years Eve fireworks – early edition – in Melbourne.
Leaving home, there were some dark, nasty looking clouds on the far horizon. But it was still really warm and sunny, with lovely blue skies. We had high hopes of rain holding off until after the fireworks!
On the drive into the city, those big bad clouds moved fast. The left shot is when they finally covered the whole area we were heading into. Centre photo is when the wind started to pick-up and right is when we got our first few drops of rain. Still – there was hope that it would hold off until the fireworks were over.
The fireworks were due to start at the same time that this arrived. It poured down. Lots of big raindrops. People running everywhere for cover. Huge lightning. Fabulous to watch from inside the car. Grady was screaming for a feed by this time (just after 9pm), traffic was barely moving and people were making interesting decisions.
We pulled over and parked illegally to feed the boy. Bryce was fast asleep and Rowan was desperate to see the fireworks. Anton took Rowan and ran off through the rain, I kept feeding and the rain kept falling. There was a great show to be seen, fireworks behind me, lightning all around and people running around holding various items over their heads.
For a few minutes the rain eased. The fireworks finished. The lightning slowed. It was quiet and calm in the city, surreal.
Anton and Rowan returned. Rowan quite upset that he didn’t get to play drums?? (I don’t know either.) Everyone back into their seats and ready to go.
Once we were on our way the skies opened again, the lightning show resumed and we were glad that it was over for another year – here’s to better weather next NYE!
